Pleasant Valley Community School District Choirs

Welcome to the Pleasant Valley Community School District Choirs!

We are proud to offer many opportunities through singing in our 8 schools for Fifth Grade through High School students. Our program begins with building-level Elementary Choirs, which perform at several events throughout the year. In Junior High, students have the opportunity to participate in curricular Seventh and Eighth Grade Choirs, as well as extra-curricular opportunities such as the Chorale and honor choirs. At the High School, students are able to participate in one of four curricular choirs, both auditioned and non-auditioned, as well as four extra-curricular jazz choirs, small ensembles, activities such as Opus, All-State, and travel with the choirs. Musical Theatre opportunities are offered in conjunction with our Theatre Department. The goal of our program is to provide every student with the opportunity to learn and perform in a variety of choirs and settings, and to foster lifelong love and support for music.

High School

The PVHS Vocal Music Department is made up of over 200 students in four curricular ensembles:

Pleasant Valley Singers, Concert Choir, Women's Ensemble, and Chamber Choir

There are also four extra-curricular Jazz Choirs, as well as seasonal auditioned Bass and Treble Choirs.

The groups are directed by Meg Byrne, David Baxter, and Catherine Lyon. All students in the program receive individual voice lessons from the three directors. Our accompanists are Anne Johnson and Sheila Doak.

The choirs perform in up to 5 concerts per year, may perform at IHSMA Solo & Ensemble and Large Group Festivals, sing at local events, and at Graduation. All HS choir students are eligible to participate in the Choir Trip every other year.

The PVHS choirs have received many honors and recognition, including consistent Division I ratings, Outstanding Performance awards, placement of students in Opus, ACDA, and All-State Choirs, top placements at national competitions, and singing at Carnegie Hall in 2003.

Junior High

The PVJHS vocal music department consists of over 200 students in four curricular choirs:

The 7th Grade Boys Choir, the 7th Grade Girls Choir, and the 8th Grade Boys Choir and 8th Grade Girls Choir.

These choirs are open to any student who wishes to sing.

In addition to the three curricular choirs, there is an auditioned Chorale that rehearses outside of the school day, usually consisting of approximately 40 singers.

Peter Grau and Margaret Thompson conduct the ensembles at the Junior High. Individual voice lessons are provided to all students from the directors. The accompanist at PVJHS is Randin Letendre.

All PVJHS choirs perform four concerts each year; fall, winter and spring concerts that are all-choral at the junior high, and as part of the District Choral Festival at the high school during third quarter. Each year there are PVJHS students chosen to sing in the ICDA Opus Honor Choirs in the fall and the SEICDA Honor Choir in the spring.

Fifth-Sixth Grade Choirs

The PVCSD Fifth-Sixth Grade Choirs are based in each of the elementary buildings, and are open to any student who wishes to sing. Rehearsals vary by building and will be before school or after school.

The choirs will present several performances over the course of the year, including building Winter Programs and Fine Arts Night. They also will sing at the District Choral Festival at the High School in February, and participate in the Elementary Choir Tour at their building. Fifth and Sixth graders have been selected to sing at the ICDA Opus Honor Choirs each year.

Each choir will be directed by the building General Music Teacher:

Katie Casey, Hopewell

Keaton Connell, Riverdale Heights

Laura Klever, Bridgeview and Cody

Melissa Martinez, Forest Grove

Jon Nelson, Pleasant View
